What watery eyes can mean
A dog’s eyes make tears continuously. Overflow can happen when the eye is irritated, when tear drainage is limited, or when a hair, dust, allergy, eyelid issue, or infection is involved. A dog may also whine or seek comfort when worried or uncomfortable, but that does not tell you why the eye is watering.
Look at the whole picture: one eye or both, clear tears or thick discharge, sudden or gradual onset, pawing at the face, and any visible change to the eyelid or surface of the eye. A close-up photo in natural light can help a vet, but never force the eyelids open if the dog is painful.
When an eye problem cannot wait
Eye pain can be subtle. Squinting, holding an eye closed, a cloudy or blue-looking cornea, a bulging eye, sudden vision change, trauma, or a chemical exposure are reasons to seek same-day veterinary advice. Rinsing only when a vet or poison service tells you to is safer than trying multiple products.
For mild clear tearing without pain, keep the face clean with a soft damp cloth and avoid scented grooming products around the eyes. If the tearing persists or recurs, book an exam rather than assuming it is emotional crying.
