What ordinary hiccups look like

A hiccup is a brief involuntary diaphragm movement. In a relaxed, otherwise normal puppy or adult dog, a short episode may stop without intervention. It can be noticed after fast eating, vigorous play, excitement, or swallowing air, but these associations are not a diagnosis.

Not every repeated sound is a hiccup. Coughing, gagging, retching, reverse sneezing, airway irritation, nausea, or a swallowed object can look similar. A calm video taken from the side is more useful than trying to interrupt the episode.

How to respond without creating another problem

Keep the dog calm and allow normal access to water. Do not hold the nose, induce a fright, force food or water, or give a human remedy. For dogs that gulp meals, a slower feeding routine may be worth discussing after medical concerns are excluded.
