Why “pink eye” is not enough of a diagnosis
Conjunctivitis describes inflammation of the tissue around the eye, not a single cause. Discharge can be clear, mucus-like, yellow, or green; a dog may also squint, rub the face, blink more, or avoid light. The pattern helps a vet decide whether the problem may be infectious, allergic, structural, dry-eye related, or more urgent.
A corneal scratch, ulcer, pressure problem, or foreign body can look deceptively similar from across a room. That is why an eye exam may include stain testing or pressure testing rather than a generic prescription based on redness alone.
Protect the eye while you get advice
Stop rubbing if you can do so safely, keep the dog out of brushy areas, and prevent access to irritants. A soft damp cloth can remove discharge from the fur around the eye, but do not scrub the surface of the eye. Do not use redness-relief drops, steroid drops, antibiotic drops, or contact-lens solution without veterinary direction.
Same-day advice is appropriate for squinting, a closed eye, cloudiness, trauma, visible foreign material, sudden vision changes, marked swelling, or pain. Those signs can threaten vision and should not wait for an online remedy.
